Why Strategy Matters More in the Age of AI

“We need to use AI.”

Increasingly, that is how conversations begin.

Sometimes, an organisation wants to produce more content without expanding its team, improve marketing and communications efficiency, or keep pace with fast-moving competitors, and AI feels like the next capability to adopt.

AI can help organisations work faster. It can support research, generate ideas, adapt messages across channels, and reduce production time. But speed changes the nature of a challenge.

When content becomes easier to create, the questions underneath it become more important. What should your brand be known for? What point of view does it bring? What should remain consistent as communication increases in volume? These are strategic questions rather than technological ones.

As AI becomes more accessible, we are seeing a growing difference between organisations that have clarity and those that do not. AI can reinforce what already makes a brand distinctive, but when communication grows without a clear direction, it can also create more content without creating greater clarity.

That distinction matters because AI does not simply create content.

It amplifies what is already there.

The algorithm learns from what your brand repeats

Every piece of communication teaches people something about your organisation. Increasingly, it also teaches algorithms.

The language you use, the topics you return to, the promises you make, and the way you describe your work all contribute to a pattern. Over time, that pattern shapes how people understand your brand.

An organisation may present itself differently across its website, social channels, and sales materials. One message focuses on innovation, another on affordability, and another on expertise. Each statement may be reasonable on its own, but together they create uncertainty.

As communication grows, inconsistencies become easier for audiences to notice and harder for brands to overlook.

When communication expands, contradictions can expand with it. A brand without a clear centre can become harder for audiences to understand, remember, and trust. This is why clarity matters before scale.

More content does not necessarily create distinction

AI is making content production more accessible. That changes the value of what organisations create.

If many brands use similar tools, similar prompts, and similar references, they may begin to sound alike. The difference then comes from something the technology cannot provide by itself: a clear point of view.

We often ask organisations a simple question:

“What should people understand about you that they would not understand about anyone else?”

The answer comes from the choices an organisation makes about its audience, position, and point of view.

Who matters most to your organisation? What should they trust you for? What can you credibly promise, based on the experience you can actually deliver? Those decisions create the foundation for a recognisable voice. Without them, efficiency can increase while distinctiveness decreases.

Scale amplifies strengths and weaknesses alike

AI allows organisations to create more from a single idea. That can be valuable when the idea is clear.

A brand with a strong position and a well-defined message can use AI to adapt that message across formats, audiences, and platforms while maintaining coherence.

An organisation that is still uncertain about how it wants to be understood may produce ten times more communication with AI, but that increased volume can create greater confusion rather than greater visibility.

Volume is not the same as clarity. Technology can increase output, but strategy determines whether that output works together.

People recognise authenticity more quickly than we think

Most people do not consciously analyse brand strategy. They form impressions through the consistency and clarity of what a brand communicates.

They notice when communication feels coherent, recognise when a brand speaks with consistency, and sense when an organisation has a perspective that goes beyond familiar language and common claims.

The opposite is also true. When messages feel interchangeable, audiences can struggle to find a reason to pay attention. This matters because attention is increasingly limited. People move quickly through information, making judgments in moments rather than minutes.

A clear strategic direction helps organisations create communication that remains recognisable even as channels, formats, and technologies continue to change.

Strategy first. AI second.

We do not think the question is whether organisations should use AI. Many already are.

The more useful question is this:

“What should AI amplify?”

If an organisation understands its audience, its position, and the role it wants to play, AI can become a valuable tool. It can help extend ideas, improve efficiency, and support growth.

But technology works best when it follows direction. AI creates the most value for organisations that clearly understand who they are and what they want people to remember, so technology can amplify that direction effectively.

That is why we still start in the same place: understanding the problem, understanding people, and choosing a direction before deciding how design, communication, or technology should bring it to life.

AI can create more.

Strategy determines what that “more” means.
